Transferring
If you aren't happy at your school, don't be afraid to consider
transferring. There
is no reason why you should be miserable at school. College should
be one of the greatest experiences of your life. If you are having
problems make sure you talk to someone. Let someone else know how
you are feeling and confront what is bothering you. If you can't
stand your roommate, and talking to him or her about the problem
hasn't
helped, you don't need to transfer to another school to be happy;
just talk to housing services and request to be placed with someone
else. Some problems can be fixed, but there are some that can only
be fixed by transferring to another school.
Here are some common reasons for transferring:
• Don't feel like you fit in and don't like the students there.
• School is too challenging or not challenging enough.
• Don't like the professors.
• School doesn't have your desired major or program.
• Don't like the weather.
• Need to be close to home due to an illness or needs of a family member.
Never feel embarrassed or ashamed to consider transferring. Students do it
all the time; the most important consideration is that you are happy
where you are. If you feel that you have given your current school
an honest attempt, then start planning right away the necessary steps
for transferring. Talk to your academic advisor, find out when applications
are due at other schools, consider which credits will transfer, and
make sure you are 100% clear on why you want to transfer and why
you think another school will fix the problem.
**Student Tip** - Save all of your course syllabi. These can be very
helpful in getting credits to transfer to your new school, avoiding
having to retake courses.
